Castelli's New Gabba Pro Jacket Sparks Debate Over Gender-Specific Cycling Gear

Sep 23, 2026, 2:55 PM

Cycling apparel manufacturer Castelli has introduced new additions to its jacket lineup, featuring updated versions of the acclaimed Gabba series. The new range includes the Gabba Pro, Perfetto 4, and Perfetto Pro jackets, each designed with specific functionalities for varying riding conditions. However, the launch has drawn attention and discussion, particularly regarding the availability of certain models exclusively for men, raising questions about gender inclusivity within high-performance cycling gear.

Castelli Introduces New Cycling Jacket Lineup, Sparks Debate on Gender Exclusivity

Castelli, a prominent cycling apparel brand known for outfitting professional teams like Soudal Quick-Step and AG Insurance-Soudal, recently announced its latest collection of jackets. Among them, the much-anticipated Gabba Pro, an evolution of the brand's iconic Gabba jacket, which has been a benchmark in wet-weather racing apparel since its debut in 2010. This new iteration integrates Castelli's innovative 'AirCore' technology, promising advanced waterproof capabilities and breathability, a critical improvement following the ban on PFAS-based chemicals previously used.

The Gabba Pro is touted to provide 'complete waterproof coverage' for extreme rain, maintaining the jacket-meets-jersey's signature breathability and flexible fit. This redesign aims to bring the 'holy grail' of cycling kit back to its roots, offering a 'close to body' race fit with short sleeves, intended to be paired with arm warmers for adaptable use. Interestingly, the Gabba Pro will be an online-exclusive product.

Accompanying the Gabba Pro are the Perfetto 4 and Perfetto Pro jackets. The Perfetto 4, designed for 'everyday riders,' offers a more 'tailored' performance fit, suitable for cool conditions between 4-12°C (39-53°F) with a chance of light showers. This model is available in both men's and women's fits, featuring updated aesthetics such as transparent 'chameleon tape' at the shoulders for a revitalized look. Men's sizes range from XS to 34XL, and women's from XS to XL, with reported weights of 286g and 239g, respectively. The Perfetto Pro, on the other hand, is built for cooler conditions (6-14°C / 42-57°F) and a 'race' fit, mirroring many features of the Perfetto 4 but exclusively available for men. This model incorporates design elements from the Gabba R, such as floating pockets and splash-tail construction, and has been utilized by the Soudal Quick-Step team. It is offered in men's sizes XS to 3XL, weighing approximately 226g.

The decision to offer the Gabba Pro and Perfetto Pro exclusively in men's sizes has generated considerable debate. Historically, the Gabba had been available for both genders since 2014. Critics suggest this move represents a regression in women's specific cycling gear, possibly driven by cost reduction rather than a genuine focus on diverse rider needs. Castelli's Global Brand Manager, Steve Smith, emphasized that these jackets are designed for superior breathability, mobility, and a competitive edge, while the Perfetto 4 enhances previous Perfetto models.

In response to inquiries about the lack of women's models for certain products, a Castelli representative stated the brand's unwavering commitment to providing top-tier performance apparel for female riders. They highlighted that women's lines undergo dedicated, gender-specific research and development, and that the product team continuously evaluates and develops high-performance garments for both men and women based on rider feedback. The company looks forward to sharing future additions to its women's collection as development progresses. Despite these assurances, the gender-exclusive release of high-performance gear remains a point of contention within the cycling community, prompting a discussion on whether a lack of availability creates a self-fulfilling prophecy regarding sales figures for women's specialized cycling apparel.

The introduction of Castelli's new jacket collection, while showcasing innovative technology and performance enhancements, has inadvertently brought to light ongoing discussions within the cycling world concerning gender inclusivity in high-performance sportswear. While brands like Castelli affirm their commitment to developing women-specific products, the decision to launch flagship models exclusively for men raises questions about the industry's approach to diversity and equal access to cutting-edge gear. This situation underscores the need for continuous dialogue and proactive measures to ensure that advancements in sports technology are accessible to all athletes, regardless of gender, fostering a truly inclusive environment for every rider.
