Johnson's preferred method for targeting these large Clear Lake cats involves slow-trolling cut mackerel baits on Santee rigs at depths of 15 to 20 feet in the lake's southwest region. He employs a specific presentation, keeping his small, silver-dollar-sized baits approximately three feet off the bottom, utilizing a cigar-shaped float and size 8 to 12 circle hooks. Despite having fished for catfish across various locations, Johnson maintains that Clear Lake's channel catfish population is unparalleled, offering an exceptional and often overlooked angling opportunity due to the lake's dominant reputation for largemouth bass.
