Contagious Cancer Found in Vermont Catfish

Lake Memphremagog, spanning the border of Quebec and Vermont, is renowned for its diverse fish species, drawing anglers seeking various catches from perch to salmon. However, a troubling development has recently cast a shadow over this aquatic haven: the identification of an infectious melanoma within the lake's brown bullhead population.

The issue first surfaced in 2011 when fishermen began noticing unusual "black, tar-like" lesions on the bullheads they caught. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife (VTFW) department, alerted by these reports, initiated a comprehensive study in 2013. By 2014, the affliction had become widespread, affecting nearly one-third of the bullhead population, prompting initial concerns about environmental contamination. Subsequent research, however, revealed these marks to be a contagious form of skin cancer, a discovery that has baffled scientists. Matt Bodnar, a VTFW Fish Health Biologist, noted the rarity of such a transmissible cancer, pointing out that it is the first melanoma of its kind known to spread contagiously in the animal kingdom, unlike those previously identified in dogs, Tasmanian devils, and bivalves.

Researchers, including Dr. Julie Dragon from the University of Vermont, are delving into the mystery of this aggressive cancer. They hypothesize that the disease spreads among bullheads during spawning periods when fish are in close contact. The fact that the immune systems of infected fish do not combat the disease suggests underlying factors, possibly environmental pollutants compromising their immunity or specific genetic mutations. Although the cancer has not been observed in other fish species in the lake or shown to be transferable to humans, its sudden appearance and contagious nature underscore the urgent need for continued research. VTFW plans to conduct cohabitation studies in 2027 to observe disease transmission and assess the viability of these melanistic cells in water, aiming to uncover environmental stressors that may contribute to the disease's prevalence.
