Costa Rican Angler Catches Potential World Record Snook

A recent fishing excursion off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica yielded an extraordinary catch that could potentially rewrite the record books. Captain Ruddy Zapata, a seasoned guide from Quepos, accompanied by two American retirees, Will Hefley and Ronnie, embarked on a leisurely snook fishing trip that culminated in a monumental discovery.

On May 9th, while trolling live sardine baits near the mouth of the Parrita River, a location renowned for its large snook population, Hefley hooked what would become the fish of a lifetime. After an intense 30-minute battle with heavy-duty tackle, a massive snook was brought alongside their panga boat. The fish was so large it required both Zapata and Hefley to haul it aboard, later officially weighing in at an astonishing 72.6 pounds on certified scales at Marina Pez Vela. This impressive specimen measured 48 inches in length with a 32-inch girth, far surpassing the existing International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Pacific black snook record of 59.5 pounds, set in 2014, also off Quepos.

Following the incredible catch, all necessary documentation and paperwork for Hefley's snook have been submitted to the IGFA for world record consideration. The local community in Quepos celebrated the achievement, and the fish was subsequently cleaned and consumed. Plans are reportedly underway to create a replica mount of this record-breaking snook, potentially for display at Marina Pez Vela, immortalizing this remarkable angling accomplishment and further solidifying Costa Rica's reputation as a premier destination for giant snook fishing.
