Its official introduction as a factory-loaded option by Remington in 1965, coinciding with its chambering in their Model 700 and 40XB match rifles, marked a significant turning point. This formal endorsement transformed what was once a specialized wildcat load into a widely accessible and popular choice. Interestingly, Browning had already foreseen its potential, releasing a .22-250 rifle in 1963, signaling the cartridge's growing underground appeal. The genesis of the .22-250 can be traced back to the .250-3000 Savage cartridge, introduced in 1915, renowned for its accuracy and efficacy on various game. However, it was Captain Grosvenor Wotkyns, a retired army officer, who around 1935, successfully necked down the .250-3000 Savage case to .22 caliber. This realization, however, came too late for the .220 Swift, as the .22-250, initially known as the .22 Varminter, began to gain traction. Popularized by gunsmith J. E. Gebby and handloader J. Bushnell Smith, the .22-250 offered a more balanced approach to high-velocity varmint shooting, learning from the lessons of its ill-fated predecessor.
