Transform Your Life: Embrace Strength, Health, and Lasting Change

Embracing a New Chapter: Overcoming Inactivity and Chronic Discomfort

For many years, the idea of regular exercise felt more like an obligation than a pleasure. Throughout my twenties and early thirties, my engagement with fitness was sporadic, often involving brief periods at the gym with a personal trainer, followed by stretches of inactivity. This inconsistency meant I primarily led a sedentary life, rarely pushing my physical limits.

The Turning Point: Addressing Aches, Fatigue, and Weight Gain in My Late Thirties

As I approached my late thirties, a growing sense of weariness, persistent back and knee pain, and noticeable weight gain compelled me to confront my lifestyle. I found myself lacking the energy to engage actively with my daughter, and I no longer felt like myself. It became clear that a significant change was necessary for my physical and mental health.

Setting Ambitious Goals: Improving Mental Well-being, Reducing Weight, and Building Muscle

My resolve to change solidified into clear objectives: I aimed to enhance my mental state, achieve a healthier weight, and develop stronger muscles. This newfound determination led me to seek professional guidance to kickstart my fitness journey.

Discovering Strength Training: A Path to Body Recomposition and Macronutrient Awareness

At 38, I enlisted the help of a personal trainer to begin a regimen of strength training. Recognizing that muscle mass naturally diminishes with age, I was committed to building and maintaining it as I neared 40. My brother connected me with Adam Enaz, a trainer specializing in body recomposition through strength training and meticulous macronutrient tracking. This approach focused on simultaneously losing fat and gaining muscle, a concept that resonated deeply with my goals.

Dedicated Training: A Combination of Weights and Cardio for Holistic Health

Under Adam's virtual guidance, I committed to five rigorous training sessions per week. These sessions integrated strength exercises using both free weights and resistance machines, alongside cardio on the treadmill, stationary bike, and stair stepper. The immediate impact on my mental health was profound; stress levels decreased, energy soared, and I found genuine enjoyment in adhering to a structured workout schedule.

Dietary Shifts: Adapting Traditional Cuisine to Support Fitness Goals

My dietary habits also underwent a significant transformation. Hailing from Sri Lanka, my meals traditionally consisted of carb-heavy dishes like rice and curry, often low in protein. I also had little understanding of calorie intake and a tendency to overeat. While preserving my cultural heritage was important, Adam helped me learn macro counting, enabling me to enjoy smaller portions and monitor my protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake. Increasing my protein consumption with lean meats became crucial for muscle development, and re-creating healthier versions of traditional Sri Lankan meals became a cherished family activity.

Transformative Outcomes: Eradicating Chronic Pain and Embracing a Healthier Lifestyle

Within eight weeks of consistent strength training, cardio, and macro tracking, I experienced an unprecedented improvement in my well-being. Not only did the numbers on the scale decrease, but my chronic pain vanished, and I felt undeniably stronger. This new lifestyle was incredibly fulfilling, and I was determined to maintain it.

Advanced Training: Focusing on Hypertrophy and Progressive Overload

Now, on the brink of 40, my training focuses on lifting heavier weights and targeting hypertrophy—the enlargement of muscle tissue. I train four days a week, aiming to work each muscle group at least twice for optimal growth. Each session typically involves three upper-body and three lower-body exercises, with sets and reps adjusted based on the exercise and weight, usually a minimum of three sets of eight to twelve repetitions. I continue to follow Adam's programming, progressively increasing intensity by adding weight or reps to continually challenge my body.

Progress and Perseverance: Celebrating Milestones in Strength and Endurance

Lower body training, initially my biggest challenge, has become a source of immense pride. I've progressed from barely hip thrusting 60 pounds for a single rep to successfully completing 10 reps at 135 pounds. My next goal is to hit 12 reps at 140 pounds. Additionally, my cardiovascular endurance has vastly improved; what was once a struggle to jog for five minutes is now a comfortable 15 to 20-minute run. Before each lifting session, I dedicate five minutes to cardio for heart health, followed by a ten-minute cool-down.

Motivating Factors: Guiding Principles for Sustained Transformation

Three core elements were instrumental in achieving my strength transformation. These factors provided the necessary drive and direction for my journey toward a healthier and stronger self.

Leading by Example: Inspiring My Daughter Through Personal Strength

As a mother, it is paramount for me to embody my strongest, most capable self for my daughter. Before my transformation, I often felt drained, operating on a low power mode, which I knew was not the ideal example to set. This realization served as a vital wake-up call, catalyzing a journey that has profoundly reshaped my life and equipped me to be the best mother possible. Now, I have ample energy to keep pace with her, whether it’s playing at the park or cycling alongside her. It’s deeply rewarding to know she observes my commitment to health, understanding the importance of caring for one's body at every stage of life.

Culinary Adaptation: Crafting Healthier Versions of Beloved Cultural Dishes

My cultural heritage is a cherished and integral part of my identity, making it essential to continue preparing traditional Sri Lankan dishes throughout my fitness journey. Fortunately, learning about macronutrients revealed that I could still enjoy my favorite foods by focusing on portion control and making strategic ingredient substitutions. For instance, instead of always using coconut milk and oil as a base, I began incorporating a tablespoon of Greek yogurt, olive oil, water, and various spices. Initially skeptical, I was delighted to find that these modifications maintained the authentic taste while significantly reducing calories and fat, and increasing protein. Now, I frequently prepare healthier versions of chicken, fish, and lean beef stir-fries, curries, or dahl, enriched with fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices.

Embracing Longevity: Developing an Enjoyable and Sustainable Fitness Lifestyle

Overhauling my lifestyle presented challenges, but I understood that establishing a sustainable, lifelong routine was key to achieving lasting strength, both internally and externally. In the past, I shied away from physical activity, but once I committed to learning, practicing, and improving, I discovered a genuine pleasure in pushing my physical boundaries. The feeling of strength is incredibly empowering, and cultivating a fitness regimen that I truly enjoy has instilled discipline and consistency in my life. Having dedicated the past year and a half to weightlifting and balanced nutrition, and witnessing the profound changes in my own life, I recently pursued certifications as a nutritionist and personal trainer to deepen my expertise in health and wellness. I am immensely grateful for this transformative journey and aspire to inspire other women to embark on their own paths to strength and well-being. It is, unequivocally, a worthwhile endeavo
