Froome's Latest Venture: A Mediterranean Crossing for Charity

Chris Froome, a four-time Tour de France victor, has confirmed his participation in a charitable initiative next week. He will be part of a 32-strong group of athletes undertaking a challenging water bike journey across the Mediterranean Sea. This event is organized to benefit the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation, as announced recently.

Elite Cyclists Unite for Ocean Awareness

The 41-year-old cycling icon will be accompanied by former WorldTour professionals Jakob Fuglsang and Filippo Pozzato in the "Together Crossing for the Pelagos." This event, scheduled for Friday, June 19, is described as a "sporting and charitable initiative." Participants will navigate 225 kilometers from Viareggio, Italy, to Monaco on specialized water bikes.

Protecting the Pelagos: A Sanctuary on the Water

The crossing involves eight teams, each comprising four riders. Their collective goal is to raise funds for two prominent foundations: the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. These contributions are earmarked for "ocean awareness and protection." The challenging 225km route will specifically traverse the Pelagos Sanctuary, a designated protected marine area that spans the French Riviera, Monaco, and the Ligurian coast. The event also receives support from sunglass manufacturer Scicon Sports and aims to elevate public understanding of water safety while backing educational programs focused on drowning prevention.

Princess Charlène's Vision: Sport Meets Conservation

According to the Monaco Tribune, Princess Charlène articulated her vision for the event last week. She stated, "By integrating sport with ocean preservation, my Foundation intends, through The Crossing in June, to inspire commitment, promote the safeguarding of the Mediterranean, and demonstrate that human accomplishment and ecological responsibility can coexist."

Froome's Post-Racing Endeavors: A New Chapter

This event marks another development in Froome's career trajectory, as he has not competed professionally since last August and is currently without a team affiliation. In March, he was appointed as the chief innovation officer at Vekta, an AI training platform. Following this, in April, he participated in a Gran Fondo in Panama alongside Alejandro Valverde, where he famously reenacted his ascent of Mont Ventoux from 2016.

Uncertain Future: Froome's Ongoing Cycling Journey

Despite these new ventures, the celebrated athlete has yet to make an official announcement regarding his future in competitive cycling. In December, he cryptically told Cyclingnews, "People will know soon enough," but has largely kept a low profile, with occasional social media updates about his leisure activities such as skiing, basketball, and attending a rallying event near his Monaco residence.

Scicon Sports' Enduring Commitment to Water Safety

Claudio Fantin, operational manager at Scicon Sports, emphasized the company's long-standing connection to the event in a press release. He noted, "The Water Bike Crossing holds a unique significance in the history of Scicon Sports. Our involvement in this project signifies a return to the foundational journey that helped shape a vital part of our brand identity." He further added, "We are proud to lend our support to an event that consistently raises funds for educational initiatives dedicated to preventing drownings and promoting water safety. This is a message we wholeheartedly endorse and are delighted to continually support."
