Scott has rolled out a substantial redesign for its Spark RC cross-country race bicycle, a model celebrated for its numerous World Cup triumphs under the expertise of Nino Schurter. The newest Scott Spark RC retains its signature integrated shock design, positioning the rear shock discreetly within the frame, just above the bottom bracket. This configuration offers several advantages, notably shifting the bike's center of gravity lower, which enhances handling and overall weight distribution. Scott highlights that this intelligent design allows for the reduction of material in other sections of the front triangle, such as shock mount points, leading to a lighter overall frame. Furthermore, the protected placement of the shock ensures its durability and shields pivot points from external elements. The shock area is secured by removable panels that are effortlessly operated via clips and magnets, maintaining both security and accessibility. For riders, easy-to-read indicators for sag and travel are incorporated. A significant design feature is the new Spark RC's compatibility with standard XC shocks, providing flexibility for component selection.
Following a trend seen in contemporary XC race bikes, the Scott Spark RC, offering 120mm of suspension travel both front and rear, now incorporates a flex-stay suspension system. This change is aimed at reducing the bike's overall weight and simplifying its mechanical complexity. Previously, the Spark RC design featured a pivot point on the seat stay. According to Scott's press release, their flex pivot system is engineered to minimize deflection, ensuring that the suspension remains active. The necessary flex is primarily engaged towards the end of the travel, synergizing with the shock's air spring to provide a consistent and predictable bottom-out experience. While the Spark RC typically comes with a 120mm fork, it is also capable of accommodating a fork with up to 130mm of travel.
Among the notable innovations in the Spark RC is the "Octopus Cable-Routing Technology," or Syncros OCT, which simplifies the often-cumbersome process of headset cable routing. This system features continuous, color-coded pathways, making cable and hose installation more straightforward. The end result is a remarkably tidy and aerodynamic cockpit. The frame also includes two bottle mounts within the front triangle. Ingeniously, the threads for the seat-tube bottle mounts are located externally, allowing for an uninterrupted seat tube that can accommodate longer dropper posts. This design ensures that even smaller frame sizes can fit a 150mm dropper post, with larger frames supporting up to 200mm of travel.
Beyond the bottle mounts, Scott has integrated accessory mounts on the underside of the top tube, further enhancing versatility. Certain Spark models also boast "Save-the-Day" storage, an in-frame compartment accessible by removing the shock's top cover. While perhaps less critical for race day, this feature offers practical storage for training rides. Scott has made this system removable, emphasizing that internal storage components and cable guides are modular. This allows riders to configure the bike for pure race performance, potentially shedding up to 100 grams of weight by removing the fully equipped storage system. This approach mirrors a recent decision by Specialized to eliminate in-frame storage from their Epic 9 cross-country race bike to achieve significant weight savings.
The Scott Spark RC frame also integrates a steering stopper mechanism designed to prevent damage to the frame and safeguard cables and hoses from overstretching during a crash. Scott states that this stopper engages automatically. Although many frames feature steering limiters, Scott's design appears to utilize a unique mechanism that requires resetting after an impact, ensuring the bike can continue to be ridden efficiently. In terms of geometry, the Scott Spark RC introduces a three-position angle-adjust headset. In its neutral setting, the bike boasts a 65.9° head tube angle, which can be adjusted to a steeper 66.4° or a slacker 65.4°. This middle setting is 1.3° slacker than its predecessor and nearly half a degree slacker than the Specialized Epic 9. Further geometric adjustments include a slightly slacker seat tube angle, shorter chainstays, and extended reaches. Scott reports that a Spark RC frame, excluding the shock, can weigh as little as 1,427g, though this is approximately 100g heavier than the Specialized Epic 9, currently the lightest full-suspension mountain bike frame available. The lightest complete build, the Spark RC SL, weighs 21.83lb without the Save-the-Day kit, while the most economical Comp build comes in at 28.44lb.
