Generous Donation Paves the Way for Completion of Iconic Lake Tahoe Mountain Bike Loop
The Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association (TAMBA) is on the brink of realizing a long-held vision: the completion of an iconic 12-mile mountain bike loop that will seamlessly link Meeks Bay and Lost Lake on Lake Tahoe's West Shore. This ambitious undertaking, which includes the creation of approximately five miles of new singletrack, has received a substantial boost from a generous $250,000 donation. This financial contribution will fund the crucial 2026 construction season, bringing this scenic and challenging trail system to fruition and offering enthusiasts unparalleled access to the region's natural splendor.
The centerpiece of this development is the 'Meeks Ridge' trail, a dynamic addition designed to cater to various riding preferences. Drew Bray, Executive Director at TAMBA, highlights its flowy and enjoyable ascent, featuring strategic switchbacks that lead to spectacular panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. For those tackling the full 12-mile circuit clockwise, Meeks Ridge will serve as a vital climbing path. Conversely, when ridden as a descent, it offers a more approachable alternative to the area's predominantly technical double-black diamond routes. While described as 'Tahoe intermediate,' meaning it still presents significant challenges with its rugged terrain, granite slabs, and large boulders, it promises an exhilarating experience. The trail will encompass an elevation change of approximately 1,400 feet over its five-mile stretch and will notably be accessible to Class 1 e-bikes, broadening its appeal. Bray further emphasized the trail's ability to reveal previously unexperienced vistas of Desolation Wilderness, expansive granite formations, and ancient forests, culminating in stunning outlooks over Meeks Bay and Meeks Meadow.
The 12-mile loop integrates Meeks Ridge with two existing trails: General Creek and Lost Lake. General Creek begins with a dirt-road climb, transitioning into singletrack, with the initial two miles (the Sugar Pine section) being of intermediate difficulty. It then progresses to a more demanding black diamond section for about a mile, concluding with a quarter-mile of double-black diamond terrain. This section connects directly to the 2-mile Lost Lake Trail, another black diamond offering. These trails are bidirectional, but riding them clockwise provides an impressive 1,600-foot descent. The idea of connecting Meeks Bay and Lost Lake with singletrack has been a long-standing aspiration, transforming into reality in 2022 with initial volunteer efforts. By 2023, The Tahoe Fund officially supported the project, introducing professional trail crews and accelerating progress, with four miles of Meeks Ridge already completed. TAMBA anticipates the entire Meeks Ridge project will be finished by the fall of 2027, with 75% of the work already done.
The significant $250,000 donation came from Kyle and Jess Aster, who have been steadfast supporters of TAMBA since 2019. Kyle Aster, in a statement on his website, reflected on the restorative power of trails, noting how they offer a sanctuary for reconnecting with nature and fostering a positive community spirit. This timely donation ensures the continuity of the Meeks Ridge project's 2026 work season. Drew Bray recounted meeting with the Asters multiple times to identify the most impactful projects for their contribution, ultimately deciding on Meeks Ridge. This investment is particularly strategic as TAMBA and the wider Tahoe community are embarking on a more extensive initiative: the Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project. This project aims to improve and expand trail connectivity, add new trails, and upgrade existing infrastructure across the Tahoe Basin. A key aspect of this broader vision is the increased adoption of e-bikes on over 100 miles of trails. Bray underscored that the completion of Meeks Ridge, made possible by the Asters' generosity, is a foundational step in realizing the ambitious goals of the Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project, showcasing the potential for transforming Tahoe's trail network.
The completion of the Meeks Ridge trail marks a pivotal moment for Lake Tahoe's mountain biking community. This final segment will forge a seamless 12-mile loop, linking previously separated points and creating an enhanced experience for cyclists. The project exemplifies the powerful combination of community vision, dedicated volunteer work, professional expertise, and generous philanthropy in preserving and expanding access to natural recreational spaces. This achievement will not only offer diverse riding challenges and stunning scenery but also integrate with broader regional plans to modernize and improve the entire trail system, solidifying Lake Tahoe's reputation as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
