Maine's Patten Town Receives Significant Grant for New Mountain Bike Trails at Peavey Brook

A substantial grant of $260,000 is set to ignite the development of 3.5 miles of new mountain biking paths within the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center in northern Maine. This significant infusion of funds is poised to expand the trail system in Patten, a formerly timber-centric community, to an impressive total of 10 miles. This strategic investment positions Patten as a burgeoning hotspot within Maine's rapidly expanding mountain biking landscape, attracting enthusiasts and bolstering local tourism.

The expansion at the Peavey Brook Outdoor Center (PBOC) is a joint venture, orchestrated by the Elliotsville Foundation, Inc. (EFI), and co-managed by the Outdoor Sport Institute (OSI) and Mt. Chase Lodge. This collaborative effort builds upon existing infrastructure, aiming to create a comprehensive network that caters to various skill levels. Patten, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Millinocket, is intentionally cultivating its unique identity within the state's trail scene, complementing the growing popularity of nearby destinations like the Katahdin Area Trails. The project's stakeholders, including Steve Kasacek, Director of Trail Development at OSI, Dan Rogan, OSI's Katahdin Region Coordinator, and Lindsay Downing, co-owner of Mt. Chase Lodge, shared insights into the initiative's profound local impact.

The journey to this significant expansion began with Mt. Chase Lodge, a historic sporting camp for hunters and fishermen, which pioneered Patten's first mountain bike trails. Lindsay Downing, who grew up at the lodge and later purchased it with her husband, recognized the immense potential of wilderness experiences and the role trails play in attracting visitors. After securing a $50,000 grant in 2020, Downing collaborated with OSI to develop a concept plan and subsequently expand the lodge's trail mileage to three miles. Building on this success, OSI, in partnership with IMBA and EFI, initiated the Peavey Brook trail system on a 300-acre parcel of land owned by the Elliotsville Foundation. This facility, co-managed by OSI and Mt. Chase Lodge, opened in summer 2025, offering rental gear, restrooms, and bike maintenance services. The current five miles of trails, ranging from green XC loops to green and blue climbing and downhill trails, will be further enhanced by the new grant, adding more green and blue XC loops and another blue downhill trail. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2026, with a target completion in 2028, fostering an appreciation for the outdoors among the youth and the wider community.

The development of these interconnected trails represents a transformative vision for Patten, transcending mere recreational opportunities to foster community growth and a renewed connection with nature. As the area continues to evolve, the increasing accessibility and appeal of its outdoor offerings promise to establish Patten as a beacon for adventure seekers and a model for sustainable rural development.
