Memorial Cycling Event Honors Finlay Tarling in Wales

A poignant cycling event is set to take place on September 13, as the final leg of the Llandow Revival Series will be dedicated to the memory of Finlay Tarling, a promising 19-year-old Welsh cyclist whose life was tragically cut short. This special race aims to honor Tarling's legacy and rally support for aspiring young cyclists in Wales.

The cycling community was deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Finlay Tarling on August 14. He was involved in a fatal accident during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal when he was struck by a non-race vehicle. In response to this profound loss, the Maindy Flyers Cycling Club, organizers of the Llandow Revival Series, decided to transform the final race day into a tribute.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for the 'For Fin' initiative, a GoFundMe campaign established in Tarling's honor. This fund is dedicated to providing support and opportunities for young cyclists in Wales, helping them pursue their dreams in the sport. The initiative has already garnered significant attention and support, raising over £96,000 to date, demonstrating the immense generosity and solidarity within the cycling community.

Mike Richards, chair of Maindy Flyers, expressed the profound significance of the upcoming race. He stated that the circuit owners have generously waived the £500 hire fee, which will now be directly donated to the 'For Fin' fund. Additional fundraising activities are planned throughout the day, and a large turnout is anticipated for what promises to be a deeply emotional yet commemorative event.

Finlay's father, Michael Tarling, is expected to participate in the Category 3/4 open race, adding another layer of personal significance to the memorial. The day will feature a total of nine races, ranging from under-eights to elite categories, all held on the 1.4km closed Llandow motor racing circuit, located west of Cardiff. Spectators are encouraged to attend with their families, bringing gazebos and picnic tables to create a festive, community-oriented atmosphere.

The cycling world has already begun to honor Tarling's memory. A minute's applause was observed before the start of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men, where his NSN Cycling team is competing. His parents, Michael and Dawn Tarling, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing their unbearable grief and remembering Finlay not just as a son and brother, but as their best friend, cherishing his gentle nature and dry sense of humor. Finlay's elder brother, Josh, also paid tribute by choosing to ride the Vuelta a España on August 22 with his team Netcompany-Ineos, finishing third in the individual time trial on stage one before withdrawing from the race on stage six. Finlay Tarling's funeral is scheduled for September 17, a private ceremony for close family and friends.
