Merida Speeder Series Reimagined for Gravel Adventures and Enhanced Comfort

Merida has launched an enhanced iteration of its enduring Speeder flat-bar bicycle, redesigning the aluminum frame for off-road excursions. These latest models feature expanded tire clearance, accommodating widths of up to 50mm, along with additional attachment points and refined geometry. This transformation prioritizes improved comfort and adaptability for varied terrains, with the Speeder 100 model now beginning at an accessible price of £800.

A key enhancement is the expanded tire capacity, moving from previous 32mm to 35mm compatibility to a generous 45mm, with space for up to 50mm tires. This upgrade significantly boosts comfort and traction, providing riders with enhanced control across diverse surfaces. Merida notes that this update retains the familiar upright riding posture, comfort, and daily utility that have historically made the Speeder line a global success. Furthermore, the frame geometry has been subtly adjusted; a more pronounced top tube slope allows for greater seatpost exposure, which in turn increases flexibility and rider comfort. The integration of a thinner 27.2mm seatpost further augments this comfort. Additionally, the head angle has been marginally slackened, contributing to a more stable and controlled ride, particularly on uneven or challenging routes.

This re-envisioned Merida Speeder is designed to appeal to a wider audience, extending beyond its traditional use for daily commutes and fitness routines. While still ideal for city travel and maintaining physical well-being, the updated model invites riders to explore further, embracing gravel touring or weekend bikepacking trips. The range now includes options with a classic high top tube and a new low step-through frame, catering to varied rider preferences. All frames are constructed from aluminum, with the Speeder 500 featuring a carbon-look smooth finish, while other models maintain a standard finish to optimize affordability. The top-tier Speeder 500 is equipped with a carbon fork, whereas other models utilize a rigid aluminum fork. The majority of the series features 1x drivetrains, with only the Speeder 200 incorporating a double chainset and front derailleur.
