Parc du Mont-Saint-Mathieu: Quebec's New Mountain Biking Haven

Nestled between Saint-Mathieu Lake and Saint-Mathieu Mountain, Parc du Mont-Saint-Mathieu stands as a fresh addition to Quebec's outdoor recreation landscape, boasting a new lift-accessed bike park with an array of distinct trails. The park’s defining characteristic lies in its exceptional use of Quebec’s abundant rocky terrain, which has been artfully incorporated into the trail network. Charles Stevens, owner of Kodiak Trail Works, emphasized that significant natural rock formations were seamlessly integrated into the design, crafting a truly unique riding experience. Situated approximately 150 miles north of Maine's northernmost point, Parc du Mont-Saint-Mathieu, originally a ski resort operating for over half a century, officially unveiled its bike park in 2026. This launch introduces a crucial new destination for Quebec riders, addressing a relative scarcity of trails in the area. The park features a total of seven trails: six exhilarating downhill routes and one dedicated climbing path, designed to accommodate a spectrum of skill levels. Among these are two double-black diamond trails, Pikliz and Cowboy, each presenting formidable challenges. Pikliz, named after a fiery Haitian pepper, is an advanced jump trail intricately woven with rock elements, while Cowboy offers a fast and raw downhill experience, specifically designed for racing, with multiple line choices for expert riders. Intermediate and advanced options include Pedalo, a blue technical trail navigating massive boulders and slabs, and Anaconda, an intermediate flow trail packed with rock drops, tabletops, and sharkfins. Rochante, the park's black-rated trail, provides a highly technical journey featuring rock slabs and a notable wall ride built into a natural rock face.

Even the park's green-rated trail, Mousse, offers an engaging experience for beginners, skillfully incorporating the cliff band with beginner and intermediate rock features. Kodiak’s design elevated the trail tread onto immovable boulders, guiding riders past impressive rock outcrops adorned with moss and ferns. Mousse spans two miles, descending nearly 600 feet, and while its main path is wide and flowy, it includes numerous rock side options for skill progression and confidence-building. The bike park operates its lift on weekends, offering unlimited trips to the summit for a fee, with pedal-up access available on certain weekdays. Despite its rural location, the park has quickly gained popularity, attracting hundreds of riders each weekend. The enthusiastic community response and the demand for further expansion underscore the project’s success and its promising future, establishing Parc du Mont-Saint-Mathieu as a rugged and rewarding destination for mountain bikers.
