Van Rysel Unveils New High-Performance Gravel Race Bikes

Van Rysel has expanded its cycling offerings with the introduction of two new gravel bike platforms, the RCR-G and the EDR-G, designed for distinct riding experiences. The RCR-G targets the competitive gravel racing scene with a focus on speed, while the EDR-G caters to ultra-long-distance adventures, prioritizing comfort and practicality. These new models reflect Van Rysel's commitment to innovation in the gravel cycling segment, building upon their expertise in road bike engineering.

Introducing Van Rysel's Latest Gravel Innovations

The Flanders-based cycling brand, Van Rysel, has officially unveiled its new RCR-G and EDR-G gravel bike platforms. The RCR-G is a high-performance gravel racing machine, boasting a frame weighing less than 900g and incorporating advanced aerodynamic features. Its development, led by project manager Jeremy Debeuf, focused on four key performance aspects: maintaining high average speeds, optimizing efficiency across diverse surfaces, achieving quick acceleration, and ensuring precise handling on challenging terrain. This pure competition setup marks a significant evolution from the brand's earlier multi-purpose gravel designs. Drawing inspiration from their successful RCR-R road bike, which is utilized by elite riders like Paul Seixas and the Decathlon CAM CGM team, the RCR-G integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, virtual prototyping, and extensive wind tunnel testing to adapt its road frame architecture for gravel applications. However, a crucial distinction is the selection of a modified carbon layup for the RCR-G, which, according to Alexis Grosecorge, Van Rysel's Race Bike Engineer, prevents excessive stiffness that would compromise comfort on gravel. The target weight for the complete RCR-G bike (size medium) was an ambitious 7.8kg, a goal impressively surpassed with a 7.7kg build featuring SRAM Red AXS, boasting an unpainted carbon frame at 885g and a fork at 415g. Top-tier RCR-G models feature an integrated monocoque carbon cockpit, lightweight thru-axles, and a 27.2mm round carbon seatpost chosen to absorb high-frequency vibrations and reduce rider fatigue during extended races. Despite its emphasis on weight and aerodynamics, the RCR-G accommodates tires up to 50mm wide, coming standard with 45mm Continental Terra Comp TLR tires on VR 50 Carbon wheels. It also offers versatile drivetrain compatibility, supporting up to a 50T chainring in a one-by configuration and 52T in a two-by setup, along with Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) compatibility. Comparatively, the RCR-G's geometry closely mirrors that of the Factor Ostro Gravel, with similar stack and reach measurements (554mm stack and 391mm reach for RCR-G vs. 555mm stack and 394mm reach for Ostro, both size medium), and a snappy 72-degree head angle. Its slightly longer chainstay at 426mm distinguishes it. In contrast to the Specialized Crux, the Van Rysel RCR-G offers a more aggressive, lower, and longer riding posture. Hannah Bussey, during a pre-launch event in the Var region of southern France, praised the RCR-G's agility and responsiveness on varied terrain. A simple adjustment to tire pressure significantly enhanced her riding experience, transforming a challenging route into a more harmonious and comfortable journey. The RCR-G is available in three models: the top-tier Red AXS model (£6,500/$10,999) with SRAM Red XPLR AXS, VR50 carbon wheels, and an integrated Combo RCR-R carbon cockpit; the RCR-G Force AXS (£4,000/$7,399) with SRAM Force XPLR, an aluminum/carbon stem-and-bar combo, and VR35 carbon wheels; and the RCR-G Rival AXS (£3,000/$5,299) with SRAM Rival XPLR, an aluminum bar and stem, and VR30 AL wheels. The EDR-G, the second model introduced, is engineered for ultra-long-distance comfort and multi-day practicality, characterized by a longer wheelbase (1,033.7mm vs. 1,019mm for RCR-G in size M) and a more relaxed 71-degree head tube angle for enhanced stability. Product Manager Rachel Gassier's two-year development process included 25,000km of ride data from over 30 testers. The EDR-G features a more compliant carbon layup, 15 luggage mounting points, and an integrated toolbox. Its top-end model, the EDR-G Force XPLR ($6,299 in the US), includes a RockShox Rudy XPLR fork with 40mm travel, a Deda Gera cockpit, and VR32 carbon wheels, weighing 8.85kg. A suspended fork version (£3,500) is available in the UK, weighing 9.7kg, while the EDR-G GRX (£2,100) offers a 1x setup and DT Swiss G1800 wheels, weighing 8.75kg.

The introduction of the RCR-G and EDR-G by Van Rysel reflects a growing specialization within the gravel biking market.
