Zipp Releases Affordable 404 S Carbon Wheelset

In the current cycling market, the cost of high-quality, lightweight performance wheels, particularly those incorporating carbon fiber, has seen a significant increase. This trend makes it challenging for consumers to find options from reputable Western brands that are both advanced and reasonably priced, especially within the premium segment of road bike wheels.

However, SRAM-owned Zipp, a prominent component manufacturer, is stepping forward with a new carbon-fiber wheelset designed to bridge this gap. Their latest offering aims to attract a wider customer base by making performance more accessible, without diluting the brand's core values. The Zipp 404 S emerges as the successor to the popular 303 S, a model widely recognized for its adaptability across all-road and gravel terrains, often serving as a preferred training wheel for both WorldTour professionals and everyday cyclists.

The introduction of the 404 S fills a void in Zipp's product line, created after the company unveiled its gravel-specific 303 XPLR SW and cross-country mountain bike wheels, the 1Zero HiTop S, in 2023. The 404 S incorporates Zipp’s extensive knowledge in carbon construction and aerodynamics, packaging it into a wheel that the company asserts outperforms its weight class, offering a two-watt efficiency gain over the 303 S. With a combined weight of 1,585g, these wheels boast a 50mm rim depth and a modern 23mm hookless internal rim, enabling the use of 28-29mm tires at lower pressures. The wheels are optimized for use with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, which Zipp claims provide a one-watt advantage compared to other 28mm tires on the same rim. The wheelset utilizes Zipp’s dependable 76/176 hubset, featuring a three-pawl system with 30 points of engagement, prioritizing longevity over peak performance. While customization is limited to white and dark grey decal options, the focus remains on delivering an affordable, high-performance product. To maintain its competitive price point, tire pressure sensors are not included. Durability is further enhanced by standard steel spokes and contact seal bearings, designed to withstand wet conditions, complemented by a lifetime warranty and crash replacement policy for added assurance.

Zipp has strategically positioned the 404 S within a previously underserved market segment: the sub-£1,000/$1,300 category. Priced at £985 / $1,300 / €1,100 per pair, these wheels stand out as one of the most budget-friendly 50mm-deep performance wheel options from an established brand currently available. This initiative reflects a commitment to making advanced cycling technology more accessible, fostering a broader appreciation for high-quality equipment, and enabling more riders to experience enhanced performance and reliability.
