British Cycling Introduces First National Gravel Championships in Scotland

British Cycling has unveiled plans for its inaugural National Gravel Championships, scheduled to be held in Scotland this August. This significant event marks the first time the national governing body will directly organize a gravel competition, following the decision by Red On Sports—the previous organizer—to step aside. The championships are anticipated to bring a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere, attracting both seasoned competitors and casual spectators, and are poised to further elevate the profile of gravel racing within the UK.

The much-anticipated races are slated for August 22-23 at the scenic Ae Forest in southwest Scotland. The weekend will feature elite races on Sunday, while younger participants, juniors, and masters will compete across both days. The organization of this pioneering event has been awarded to Outsider Events, a Scottish company renowned for its experience in trail running and other gravel cycling competitions, following a competitive tender process.

Ae Forest, a well-known hub for mountain biking as part of the 7Stanes network, is strategically located near Galloway Forest. This area previously hosted the championships two years ago after an unexpected venue change. British Cycling confirms that additional specifics regarding the event will be released in due course, building anticipation for what promises to be a landmark occasion for the sport.

Cameron Balfour, director of Outsider Events, expressed enthusiasm for the championships, highlighting its importance for both the region and the growing sport of gravel riding. He emphasized the goal of creating a 'festival atmosphere' at the finish line, designed to engage families and spectators alongside the athletes. This approach aligns with the ethos of their GrALBA Series, where the focus extends beyond just the competitive aspect of racing.

Joe Malik, head of development at British Cycling, lauded the community's dedicated efforts in the formative years of gravel cycling. He stated that the inclusion of gravel in the National Championship lineup is a crucial step towards British Cycling's broader mission of making cycling accessible and enjoyable for everyone, irrespective of where they choose to ride. This initiative is expected to boost interest and engagement in this thrilling cycling discipline.
