Trek Recalls 20,000 E-Bikes Due to Bolt Failures

A recent announcement confirms that around 20,000 electric bicycles manufactured by Trek have been subject to a recall. This measure was prompted by concerns that the rear wheel bolts on these units could fail when tightened correctly, posing a risk to riders.

The recall specifically impacts 19,890 units of Trek FX+ 1 and Electra Townie Go! e-bikes, produced by Hyena in Taiwan and distributed within the United States. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has urged owners to discontinue riding these bicycles and to contact an official dealer for a complimentary repair. Notably, European models are not affected by this recall. Hyena has indicated that the bolts might be susceptible to 'hydrogen embrittlement.' There have been seven reported instances of bolt failure, yet no injuries have been documented.

This incident follows previous recalls by Trek, including over 75,000 children’s and city bikes due to a brake malfunction, and 700 electric road and gravel bikes for loosening chainring bolts. This recurring pattern underscores the critical importance of rigorous quality control and responsive safety measures in manufacturing.
